Pink Iberis

iberisThis is the more familiar Candytuft, with larger florets in each flower head, but without the delightful fragrance of Iberis amara. The color of the flowers varies from white to pink to purplish and crimson, although the last color is rare, and the red-flowered varieties do not self-seed so well. Iberis umbellata Rose Flash bears deep-pink flowers. It is one of the color choices in the Iberis ‘Flash-mix’ mixture, in which lilac, white, and crimson may be discerned in addition to shades of pink.

Camellia

Camellia, the camellias, is a genus of flowering plants in the family Theaceae. They are found in eastern and southern Asia, from the Himalayas east to Japan and Indonesia. There are 100–250 described species, with some controversy over the exact number. The genus was named by Linnaeus after the Jesuit botanist Georg Joseph Kamel, who worked in the Philippines, though he never described a camellia. This genus is famous throughout East Asia; camellias are known as cháhua  in Chinese, Tea Flower.

This group makes stunning cut flowers that are sure to provoke as much admiration now as they did when the Old Masters were painting them. Because the flowers are so big and full, they like protection from wind.

Caper Flower

caper1Capers of commerce are immature flower buds which have been pickled in vinegar or preserved in granular salt. Semi-mature fruits and young shoots with small leaves may also be pickled for use as a condiment.

Capers have a sharp piquant flavor and add pungency, a peculiararoma and saltiness to comestibles such as pasta sauces, pizza, fish, meats and salads. The flavor of caper may be described as being like that of mustard and black pepper. Continue reading

Good Luck Ladybug

lady-bugLegends vary about how the Ladybug came to be named, but the most common is this. In Europe, during the Middle Ages, swarms of insects were destroying the crops. The farmers prayed to the Virgin Mary for help. Soon thereafter the Ladybugs came, devouring the plant-destroying pests and saving the crops! The farmers called these beautiful insects The Beetles of Our Lady, and – over time – they eventually became popularly known as Lady Beetles. The red wings were said to represent the Virgin’s cloak and the black spots were symbolic of both her joys and her sorrows. Continue reading

Hibiscus rosa-sinensis

hibiscusHibiscus flower preparations are used for hair care. The flowers themselves are edible and are used in salads in the Pacific Islands. The flowers are used to shine shoes in parts of India. It is also a pH indicator. China rose indicator turns acidic solutions to magenta/dark pink and basic solutions to green. It is also used for the worship of Devi and especially the red variety takes an important part in tantra. In Indonesia, these flowers are called kembang sepatu, which literally means shoe flower. Clematis

Any plant of the large genus Clematis, widely distributed herbs or vines of the family Ranunculaceae, buttercup family, many of them native to the United States. Some have an irritating sap. The vines, climbing by tendrils that are modified leafstalks, are the more popular and are usually profuse bloomers.

The flowers are varied in shape and color; the fruits are small and dry, with a feathery appearance. Most popular in North America are the Jackman clematis, C. jackmanii, a large purple hybrid, and the Japanese clematis Clematis stans with small white or blue flowers.
